About the event

Ecuador is one of the most bird-rich countries on Earth, with close to 1,700 species recorded. Its compact geography allows easy access to cloud forests, Andean páramo, and Amazonian foothills, each offering distinct bird communities. No wonder this destination is on every birder's bucket list! This October, the Northwest Nevada Bird Alliance, in partnership with Flyway Birding Tours, is offering an opportunity to visit northern Ecuador to find some unique bird species. If you are curious about birding in the tropics, this zoom session is for you! In addition, this session will offer an opportunity to talk to our bird guide, Mario Cordoba, and to ask him questions about this special tour. Mario will take us through some of the areas that will be visited on the tour, and give us an introduction to the geology and the habitats that make Ecuador one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Even if you cannot travel, this session will show some unique tropical birds like the Andean Condor, Plate-billed Mountain Toucan, Giant Antpitta, and more! And Mario will also talk about their ecology and conservation needs.

This zoom session will be hosted by our Vice President, Lauren Whitenack. Lauren is a PhD student at the University of Nevada, Reno studying Mountain Chickadees in the northern Sierra Nevada mountains. Mario Cordoba will be presenting information about some of the many birds of Ecuador and talk about the tour opportunity. Mario is the founder of Flyway Birding Tours. With over 25 years' experience guiding in the tropics, his team crafts unique birding experiences with a focus on local community conservation.
