Pinyon Jay Community Science Cone Survey with GBBO

Join GBBO biologists for a community science outing near Virginia City to search for pinyon pine cones!

Time & Location

Aug 16, 2026, 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM

Virginia City Rest Area, 135-141 D St, Virginia City, NV 89440, USA

About the event

Join GBBO biologists for a community science outing to search for pinyon pine cones! Pinyon Jays are uniquely adapted to rely on pinyon pine seeds, harvesting and caching thousands of pine nuts each fall to prepare for winter. Because pinyon pine cone production varies widely from year to year, tracking this important food resource helps us better understand and conserve this declining species.

We will meet at the rest area and migrate down to 7-mile canyon or other spots, where we will hike and do the cone survey.
